Curriculum - Spanish

At Our Lady of Fatima we are following the guidelines established by the Archdiocese of Denver for World Languages. The system we are using is ¡Viva el español! - McGraw-Hill..

Pre-Kinder

  • Religious Focus - pray the Sign of the Cross
  • Speaking - Use common greetings, respond to simple questions: What is your name?
  • Vocabulary - basic colors and shapes, numbers 1 -10, family members, body parts, pets, farm animals. Words associated with seasonal holidays.

Kindergarten

  • Religious Focus - pray the Sign of the Cross and Glory Be.
  • Speaking - Use common greetings, ask and respond simple questions: What is your name? How old are you? Sing simple songs.
  • Listening - respond to simple commands, stand up and sit down, be quiet, line up.
  • Vocabulary - colors and shapes, family members, body parts, numbers 1 - 30, pets, farm animals, zoo animals, days of the week. Words associated with seasonal holidays.
  • Grammar - use simple adjectives: pretty, big, small, long, short, tall.
  • Cultural awareness - students will experience a cultural/religious event for a Hispanic country.

1st Grade - 2nd Grade

  • Religious Focus - pray the Sign of the Cross, Glory Be, Hail Mary. Sing simple songs that are appropriate for Mass.
  • Speaking - extend the conversation answering questions: When is your birthday? What is your name? What grade are you in? Request permission for going to the bathroom, for sharpening the pencil. Tell phone number.
  • Listening - respond to classroom commands, stand up, sit down, be quiet, line up, come here. Listen to stories and answer questions about the story.
  • Vocabulary - colors and shapes, numbers 1-50. Days of the week, months of the year, state the date, tell their birthday. Body parts, classroom objects.
  • Grammar - proper use of nouns and adjectives (gender and number)
  • Cultural awareness - students will experience a cultural/religious event for a Hispanic country.

3rd Grade - 4th Grade

  • Religious Focus - pray Sign of the Cross, Glory Be, Hail Mary, and Our Father. Sing Christmas and Easter songs. Recite some Mass responses.
  • Speaking - Tell phone number. Recite the alphabet. Say the date. Talk about weather using simple phrases. Students will participate in skits acting out the dialogues.
  • Vocabulary - Numbers 1 - 70. People and places in the school. Clothing items. Parts and rooms in a house, household items.
  • Listening - Listen to a pattern book and identify the pattern.
  • Grammar - use verbs, nouns and adjectives in sentences. Identify sounds of the vowels.
  • Cultural awareness - students will experience a cultural/religious event for a Hispanic country.

5th Grade and 6th Grade

  • Religious Focus - pray Sign of the Cross, Glory Be, Hail Mary, and Our Father. Sing Christmas and Easter songs. Recite Mass responses. Research the impact of religion in the population in some Hispanic countries.
  • Speaking - Practice conversational skills.
  • Vocabulary - Numbers 1 - 100. Words for sports and seasonal activities. Seasons and months of the year. Foods, meals and table settings. Places in the community.
  • Listening - listen to stories and answer to questions in Spanish.
  • Grammar - Sentences using article-noun-verb-adjective agreement.
  • Reading - read short stories in Spanish
  • Cultural awareness - identify in a map at least two Spanish speaking countries and identify their flags.

Middle School

  • Religious Focus - prayers. Sing songs for Mass. Dramatize a catholic event using songs and dialogues.
  • Vocabulary - School supplies and objects in the classroom. Animals, colors and sizes. Speaking - practice conversational skills including greetings, introductions, expressing feelings, talking about the weather and telling time.
  • Listening - follow instructions given in Spanish
  • Grammar - conjugate regular verbs in present tense
  • Reading/Writing - read short passages in Spanish and give written answers to simple comprehension questions.
  • Cultural awareness - locate in the map at least three Spanish speaking countries and identify their flags.
